How to compress a PDF

Four steps, no account, no software to install.

  1. Step 1: Upload your PDF

Drag and drop the file, or browse for it. Anything up to 100MB works — no sign-up, no email.

  2. Step 2: Pick a compression level

Low keeps maximum quality, Medium is the everyday choice, High squeezes hardest for strict upload limits.

  3. Step 3: We shrink it

Embedded images are re-encoded and downsampled, unused objects are dropped and every stream is repacked.

  4. Step 4: Download the result

See exactly how much you saved, then download. Your file is deleted from our server within 30 minutes.

Why use this PDF compressor

Built for the same people our image compressor serves — students and applicants fighting a form's upload limit at 2am.

  • Completely free

No subscription, no per-file charge, no watermark stamped across your document.

  • Text stays sharp

Only images are re-encoded. Text remains real text — still selectable, still searchable, still crisp in print.

  • Private by design

Your upload is deleted the moment it is processed, and the compressed copy auto-deletes after 30 minutes.

  • Works on any device

Compress from an Android phone, iPhone, tablet or desktop. There is nothing to install.

  • Built for form uploads

Government and university portals cap PDF uploads at 1MB or 2MB. High compression is tuned to clear those limits.

  • Honest results

If a file is already optimised we say so and return it untouched, rather than degrading it for a token saving.

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before compressing their first file.

How do I compress a PDF file online for free?

Drag your PDF onto the upload box above (or tap Browse Files to pick it from your device), choose a compression level, and press Compress PDF. The compressed file is ready to download in a few seconds. It is free, there is no sign-up, and there is no limit on how many files you can compress.

Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?

Text is never re-typeset or rasterised, so it stays perfectly sharp and still selectable at every level. Only embedded images are re-encoded. Low compression keeps images at full resolution, Medium reduces them enough for screens and everyday printing, and High trades visible image detail for the smallest possible file. If you are printing the document, choose Low or Medium.

What is the maximum PDF size I can upload?

You can upload PDF files up to 100MB. There is no page limit — a 300-page scanned document is fine as long as it is under 100MB.

Are my PDF files safe and private?

Yes. Files are sent over an encrypted connection, processed on the server, and the original upload is deleted immediately afterwards. The compressed copy is kept only long enough for you to download it and is deleted automatically within 30 minutes. Nobody reads, stores or shares your documents, and no account is required.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted PDFs cannot be read without their password, so they cannot be compressed. Open the file in your PDF reader, remove the password (usually via Protect or Security settings), save a copy, and upload that copy instead.

Which compression level should I choose?

Medium suits almost everyone — it typically cuts a scanned document by 50 to 80 percent while keeping it perfectly readable. Choose High when a form refuses your file for being over a 1MB or 2MB limit. Choose Low when the PDF will be printed and image detail matters more than file size.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

PDFs that contain only text are already tiny and highly compressed, so there is very little left to remove — the savings come mostly from images. The same applies to a file that has already been through a compressor. When that happens we tell you the file is already optimised and hand back your original rather than degrading it for a fraction of a percent.

Does the PDF compressor work on mobile?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser on Android and iOS, including picking a file straight from Google Drive, iCloud or your Downloads folder. Nothing needs to be installed.
