They take the same input and mean different things by it. Custom pages splits at every comma: typing "1-3, 5, 8-10" gives you three separate PDFs, one holding pages 1 to 3, one holding page 5, and one holding pages 8 to 10. Extract selected pages puts all of them into a single PDF containing pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10, in that order. Use Custom pages when you need the parts kept apart, and Extract when you need one document with the rest removed.

Choose Page range and set both boxes to the same number — From page 7, To page 7 — or choose Extract selected pages and tap page 7 in the preview grid. Either way you get a single PDF containing only that page, named after it so you can find it later. This is the usual way to pull one certificate out of a combined scan.

You can upload one PDF of up to 100MB, with no page limit — a 300-page scanned document is handled the same as a two-page certificate. One split can produce up to 500 separate files. That only matters if you choose "every page" on a very long document; a page range or custom groups will take the part you need from a file of any length.

No. Splitting copies your pages across exactly as they are — nothing is re-compressed, re-encoded or rasterised. Text remains real text that can still be selected and searched, and images keep the resolution they had. Each new file also carries only what its own pages need, which is why one page out of a 300-page scan comes out small rather than large.

Yes. Files are sent over an encrypted connection, split on the server, and the upload is deleted the moment the split finishes. The files made from it are kept only long enough for you to download them and are deleted automatically within 30 minutes. The page preview runs entirely in your browser, so previewing a document uploads nothing. No account is required, and nobody reads or stores your documents.

No. An encrypted PDF cannot be read without its password, so its pages cannot be copied into new documents. Open the file in your PDF reader, remove the password (usually under Protect or Security settings), save a copy, and upload that copy instead. We check for this as soon as you choose a file, so you find out before anything is uploaded.

No. Whenever a split produces more than one file you get a ZIP containing all of them, which is one download and one thing to unzip. Every file also has its own download link underneath, so if you only wanted page 7 out of thirty you can take just that. When a split produces a single PDF there is no ZIP, because wrapping one file in an archive would only add a step.

Page content, images, fonts and page-level annotations such as links are carried over into each new file. Document-level extras — bookmarks or outlines, interactive form fields and named destinations — are not, because a bookmark pointing at a page that is no longer in the file would be broken rather than useful. If you need a fillable form to stay fillable, keep it whole rather than splitting it.

Split first, then compress. Take the pages the form actually asks for, then run that much smaller document through our free PDF Compressor to fit the 1MB or 2MB limit most government and university portals impose. Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser on Android and iOS, including picking a file straight from Google Drive, iCloud Drive, WhatsApp downloads or your Files app. The page grid is built for tapping, so choosing pages works the same as it does with a mouse. Nothing needs to be installed.
