Most Indian recruitment portals ask for a thumb impression as a JPEG somewhere between 10 KB and 100 KB, commonly around 200 × 200 to 400 × 400 pixels on a plain white background. The presets here cover the three usual bands — 20 KB at 200 × 200, 50 KB at 300 × 300 and 100 KB at 400 × 400. Requirements do vary, so confirm the numbers in the official notification and enter them if they differ.

Turn on Background Cleanup and adjust the strength slider. It whitens every pixel lighter than a threshold to pure white while leaving the darker ink untouched, which is what turns a dull phone photo of paper into something that looks scanned. Raise the strength if patches of grey remain; lower it if faint ridges of the print start disappearing along with the paper.

A phone photo is fine, and it is what most people use. Lay the paper flat in bright, even light, hold the camera directly above it so the page is not tilted or shadowed, and fill the frame with the impression. Crop and clean it here afterwards and the result is indistinguishable from a scan for the purposes of an upload form.

A crisp, high-contrast impression cleans up far better than a faint or smeared one, and no amount of adjustment will recover ridges that were never printed clearly.

JPG (JPEG) and PNG files up to 20MB are accepted, and you can download in either. JPG is what almost every government portal expects; choose PNG only when the form specifically asks for it.
