Percentage = (Part ÷ Total) × 100

A percentage is a part written out of 100. Every formula below is that one idea rearranged for a different question — and every one of them is what the calculator above is doing behind its answer.
Percentage = (Part ÷ Total) × 100
(450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%
The one every other formula is built on. A percentage is just a part written out of 100, so divide the part by the total and multiply by 100.
Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total
(15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = 300
Used for discounts, GST, commission and any share of a known amount. Divide the percentage by 100 to get a decimal, then multiply the amount by it.
Increase % = ((New − Original) ÷ Original) × 100
((31,500 − 25,000) ÷ 25,000) × 100 = 26%
For a salary hike, a price rise or a jump in marks. Take the rise, divide it by what you started with — not by the new figure — and multiply by 100.
Decrease % = ((Original − New) ÷ Original) × 100
((1,200 − 900) ÷ 1,200) × 100 = 25%
The same rule the other way round, for a discount, a fee cut or a drop in score. The original value is always the denominator.
Difference % = (|A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2)) × 100
(20 ÷ 90) × 100 = 22.22%
For two values where neither is the starting point — two quotes, two scores, two readings. It is measured against their average, which is why it is not the same as percentage change.
Original = Result ÷ (Percentage ÷ 100)
300 ÷ 0.15 = 2,000

Divide the part by the total and multiply the result by 100. For example, 450 out of 600 is (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%. On this page, choose "X is what % of Y?", enter 450 in the first box and 600 in the second, and press Calculate — you get 75% along with the working, the same figure as a decimal and as a fraction, and how much is left over.
Percentage = (Part ÷ Total) × 100. Everything else follows from it: the percentage of an amount is (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total, a percentage increase is ((New − Original) ÷ Original) × 100, and a percentage decrease is ((Original − New) ÷ Original) × 100. All of them are worked out for you above, and each result shows the formula it used.
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply the amount by it: (15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = 300. Use the "What is X% of Y?" mode — it also shows you the amount with that percentage added on and with it taken off, which is what you need for GST, a discount or a commission.
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide the result by the original value, and multiply by 100. A salary going from ₹25,000 to ₹31,500 is ((31,500 − 25,000) ÷ 25,000) × 100 = a 26% increase. The common mistake is dividing by the new value instead of the original one — the number you started with is always the denominator.
Subtract the new value from the original value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A price falling from ₹1,200 to ₹900 is ((1,200 − 900) ÷ 1,200) × 100 = a 25% decrease. Note that a 25% fall does not undo a 25% rise: going up 25% from 1,200 gives 1,500, and coming back down to 1,200 from there is a 20% decrease.
Percentage change measures how far a value moved from a known starting point, so it is divided by the original value. Percentage difference compares two values where neither is the baseline, so it is divided by their average. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, but the percentage difference between 80 and 100 is 22.22%. Use increase or decrease for before-and-after figures, and difference for two independent readings, quotes or scores.
If you know the answer and the percentage but not the original amount, divide instead of multiplying: 15% of something is 300, so the something is 300 ÷ 0.15 = 2,000. This is what you need to find a pre-GST price from a total, or a list price from a discounted one.
